The medical term for mouth blisters is "aphthous stomatitis". These are little wounds, which show up on the mucosa of the mouth. Mouth blisters are very common, but usually they prevail with kids.



In most cases, mouth blisters are caused by a virus called "Herpes simplex labialis". Under herpes infection, little bubbles may appear on skin and lips, or/and on the mucosa of the mouth. And because the skin is very thin, these little bubbles would burst and turn into wounds, or mouth blisters. After the initial spread of the virus, the illness begins to slowly fade away, but part of the viruses nest in the regional nerve endings, and cause exacerbation of the disease every time the organism is low on resources leading to temporary drop in the immune system (strong flue, exclusive fear or worry, infection diseases etc.). The "mouth-hand-foot" syndrome flows with mouth blisters and bubbles on palms and feet.



Typical mouth blisters appear as little white or whitish spots, about a couple of millimeters wide, surrounded by a red halo. It is possible for mouth blister to appear everywhere on the mucosa of the mouth – lips, cheeks, gums, tongue, tonsils, palate. Having mouth blisters hurts, especially during consumption of hard foods (because of the mechanical irritation), as well as high-level acid food (chemical irritation) – fruits and vegetables, yoghurt, vinegar spiced meals, stews, and tomato containing sauces.



In the best scenario there is, mouth blisters go without major complains, and the time that it takes to disappear is about one to three weeks. However, very often mouth blisters might get additionally infected by bacteria and fungus, which leads to fever, swallowing of the submaxillary lymph nodes, bleeding.

If mouth blisters get infected by serious bacterial infection, to prevent it you will need antibiotics. If you are having a severe fever, what you need is antipyretics.



Besides these reasons, you can get mouth blisters if you do not keep good hygiene. The easiest way to prevent yourself is always washing your hands, and avoid touching your mouth in general.
